Keeping the community updated on the lubricant supply crisis

From a candid STLE Annual Meeting panel to a widely read TLT article and a follow-up webinar, STLE is helping the community navigate the unfolding supply crunch, with more education still to come.
Few issues have touched every corner of our field the way the lubricant supply crisis has this year. Geopolitical disruptions to crude oil moving through key maritime routes have tightened Group III base stock supply, and the pressure is already cascading into Group II, PAO and the additive chain. Industry experts have been direct about the outlook: even if disruptions ended today, a full recovery would not arrive until early next year at the earliest.
When a challenge this consequential touches procurement, formulation, manufacturing and maintenance programs all at once, STLE's job is to make sure our community has the clearest, most current information available to act on. Over the past several months, that has been one of our top educational priorities, and it is a commitment we intend to keep for as long as this crisis runs its course.
That effort began at the 2026 STLE Annual Meeting, where we convened a special session bringing together representatives from ILMA, API, NLGI and STLE for a conversation about where things stand. The conversation was practical and actionable, covering steps formulators and end-users can take today, from revisiting supplier contracts and rationalizing product lines to API's Emergency Provisional Licensing mechanism, which allows formulation substitutions without triggering full re-qualification.
We turned that session into a full article, The Lubricant Supply Crisis: What the Industry Needs to Do Now, published as August TLT Bonus Content. Because this issue affects the entire industry and not just our membership, we made the article free and open to everyone, and we encourage you to share it widely with colleagues and stakeholders at your company. This crisis is far from resolved, and neither is our coverage of it. Relief remains a long-term proposition, and industry leaders expect conditions to get harder before they ease.
