Wear of electric vehicle tires

Tires designed for electric and hybrid vehicles are different from those for gasoline and diesel vehicles, and they experience wear differently as well.


Now that there are more electric and hybrid cars, taxis and vans on the world's roads, one important question about them is: Do their tires wear out more quickly than those fitted to gasoline and diesel vehicles?

A search of the internet reveals some conflicting facts and opinions.

Tire wear on vehicles can be caused by a number of factors. Incorrect inflation causes uneven wear. On underinflated tires, the edges will make more contact with the road and experience excessive wear. Conversely, overinflated tires can cause the raised section in the middle of the tire to wear down. Rapid acceleration, excessive braking and reckless driving can also increase the rate at which tires wear. Incorrect wheel alignment also results in faster wear of tires, most commonly on their inside edges.

Tires designed and made for electric and hybrid vehicles are different from those for gasoline and diesel vehicles, even though they are often similarly sized. Electric and hybrid vehicles are heavier due to their battery packs. The extra weight puts more pressure on the tires. Also, both types of vehicles deliver torque instantly, which could lead to faster tread wear if the tires aren't made to eliminate or minimize this.

As a result, tires for electric and hybrid vehicles have stronger sidewalls to support extra weight and to maintain stability during acceleration. They have tread designs that are optimized for low rolling resistance, to help improve battery range. At the same time, the rubber compounds used in electric and hybrid vehicle tires are intended to make the treads durable, while still providing grip on wet or slippery roads.

Because electric and hybrid vehicles are quieter than their gasoline and diesel counterparts, their tires also have noise reduction features to help keep the cabin quiet. This is often achieved by having a special layer of polyurethane foam inside the tire tread, which absorbs vibrations and reduces the noise from transferring to the cabin.

In addition, the regenerative braking systems used in electric and hybrid vehicles affect tire wear patterns, making regular maintenance very important.

Since electric and hybrid vehicle tires are specially designed and manufactured, they cost more to buy and replace than standard gasoline or diesel tires. The cost differential can be between 60% and 90% for electric and hybrid vehicle tires but can be as high as 130% for high performance tires.

The higher upfront cost is balanced by the design benefits of better durability under heavier weight, improved efficiency, lower rolling resistance and longer-term safety. A number of manufacturers claim that, with good care, electric and hybrid vehicle tires generally last up to 30,000 miles, similar to regular vehicle tires. But they stress that electric and hybrid vehicle tires may require slightly more attention due to the heavier weight and instant torque effects.

Several other observers have claimed that, given the numerous factors that affect tire wear, the design and construction of electric and hybrid vehicle tires mean they will wear up to 30% more slowly than gasoline and diesel vehicle tires.

Conversely, other observers have noted a common rule of thumb from recent reporting is that electric and hybrid vehicle tires can wear about 20% faster than comparable gasoline or diesel-vehicle tires. The exact difference varies by vehicle, tire type and driving style. One fleet study found electric and hybrid vehicle tires lasted about 6,350 fewer miles on average than gasoline or diesel vehicles, with the first tire change happening around 17,985 miles for electric and hybrid cars versus 24,335 miles for gasoline and diesel cars. Other sources report the difference can range from roughly 5% to 20%, depending on whether the tire is electric and hybrid vehicle specific and how the vehicle is driven.

Consequently, if a vehicle is driven smoothly and correctly maintained, the tires are properly inflated and rotated regularly, the wear gap can shrink a lot.
