TLT: How long have you worked in a lubrication-related field, and how did you decide to pursue a career in the lubricants industry?
Burkett: I have worked in the lubricants industry for 38 years. Following an initial role constructing gas stations, I was assigned by Exxon to gain field sales experience, which led to a continued career in the lubricants sector.
TLT: What experiences have you been able to carry over from your career in petroleum-based lubricants?
Burkett: In summary: performance, cost and logistics remain primary considerations. The equipment being protected, along with efforts to optimize its performance, continues to be crucial as are numerous stakeholders that are involved throughout the logistics and distribution channels. While many standard tests and specifications persist, they often do not fully account for advances in the development of biobased products.
TLT: What are the biggest lessons/adjustments you have made in moving to a focus on biobased lubricants and greases?
Burkett: Education! There is presently limited awareness regarding the capabilities and advantages of biobased lubricants. Before initiating the typical sales process, it is necessary to inform customers about the current products available and often address misconceptions about biobased products and their capabilities.
TLT: What is the No. 1 piece of advice you would give to a person who might be interested in starting a career in the lubricants industry?
Burkett: Currently, the lubricants industry has a limited number of young professionals, presenting significant opportunities for new entrants. The integration of biobased products, hybrid lubricants combining biobased and conventional petroleum components, as well as advanced base oils and additives, is expected to accelerate transformation within the sector. Furthermore, advancements such as artificial intelligence and innovative processes like microwave grease manufacturing are anticipated to contribute to an increasingly dynamic environment for future generations in the industry.
TLT: Where will be the next break-throughs on biobased and biodegradable lubricants in the industrial lubricant market?
Burkett: Three key breakthroughs are expected. Biobased synthetic base oils will keep advancing in performance and cost. Hybrid products, blending petroleum and biobased oils, will offer combined benefits for cost, performance and environmental impact. While biobased fluids have led innovation, grease technology is set to rapidly advance with new products and processes.
TLT: What is the one thing you wish you would have learned earlier in your career?
Burkett: Collaborating with a network of suppliers can support formulation, testing and overall product development rather than handling every aspect independently. Projects that include customers, suppliers and my technical team tend to leverage various strengths, with all parties benefiting from a successful outcome.
