STLE introduces Future Leaders Rewards program

Edward P. Salek, CAE, Executive Director | TLT Headquarters Report October 2021

Put TLT magazine in the hands of your rising stars.

STLE has added a new benefit to the already substantial package of Corporate Member benefits. A new Future Leaders Rewards (FLR) program allows the Corporate Member representative to select two non-STLE-member employees to become TLT subscribers for a full year at no charge.

The FLR program provides companies and organizations with a way to commend rising stars—future leaders in the lubrication and tribology fields—by familiarizing them with the industry’s premiere professional society and one of its best-known services.

This initiative is in response to one of the key aspects of the STLE strategic plan, which recognizes that our members are concerned about filling the talent gap that’s occurring as more experienced technical staff leave the business. It’s one part of a robust professional development program that STLE will be rolling out in the coming years.

While the new program is just one small part of that plan, it has made a positive impression on the Corporate Member community. A growing number of Corporate Members are taking advantage of the offer to use TLT to expand the knowledge base of their workforce.

The first Corporate Member representative to respond was Dr. Peter Lee, staff engineer - chief tribologist at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio, Texas. SwRI has been an STLE Corporate Member since 2013.

SwRI is a nonprofit research and development organization that provides solutions to scientific and engineering problems. The organization occupies more than 1,500 acres, providing more than 2.3 million square feet of laboratories, test facilities, workshops and offices for approximately 3,000 employees who perform contract work for government and industry clients.

The size and scope of the operation figured into Lee’s decision to utilize the FLR program offer. He explains, “SwRI is based on a large campus with many different buildings (labs, offices, etc.) spread across it. We try to spread TLT magazine around, and everybody that sees a copy says how great it is.

“This new initiative allowed us to get this top-class magazine into more hands so people can learn from the great content. The two engineers selected have both been at SwRI for less than three years and work in different areas. Both also were made to promise to pass the magazine on to others after reading it each month.”

Who are the new TLT readers? One is Isaac Leer, a graduate in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University, who has been at SwRI for two years. He is the project manager for a variety of lubricant tests in the diesel engines test lab.

The second individual is Daniel Engstrom, a research engineer in the passenger car motor oil test labs. He has been at SwRI for three years. Engstrom is a mechanical engineering graduate from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

This is just one example of how the FLR program is working as a win-win situation for STLE and its Corporate Members. Your company’s best scientists, engineers, sales personnel and others are not only key to your organization’s success but to the continued growth and progress of the lubrication industry and field of tribology in general.
