Resource Efficiency
Resource Efficiency is one of the key global megatrends that guides Evonik’s strategy for achieving profitable growth. The critical need to achieve more with less resources is based on several converging factors: the world’s population is growing by 73 million people each year; global energy requirements will more than double by 2050; and the major consumers of energy are industry, transportation and housing. In addition, by 2030, fossil fuels will meet 90 percent of the global demand for energy; and worldwide, the number of cars on the road will increase to 1.9 billion.

What kind of impact can Evonik technology make on global warming?
Evonik viscosity index improvers (VIIs) and dispersant VIIs for engine oil can increase fuel economy by two percent. The impact of this example of Evonik’s DRIVON™ technology, in turn, results in the elimination of 123 million tons of CO2 which, otherwise, would have been added to the atmosphere.

In addition, choosing Evonik’s DRIVON™ technology for ATF and gear oil lubrication can improve efficiency sufficiently to reduce fuel consumption by another two percent. This results in the elimination of another 123 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Hydraulic fluids formulated to Evonik’s DYNAVIS® technology standards increase the efficiency of hydraulic equipment by from five to 20 percent, and results in the elimination of 14 million tons of CO2 that, otherwise, would have been released into the atmosphere.

What goes into a typical synthetic industrial gear oil?

Most synthetic IGOs are made with polyalphaolefin (PAO) high- and low-viscosity base fluids. Performance additives are needed to prevent the hardware from wear and fatigue and the oil from aging. Because PAO is a weak solvent, it has poor additive dissolving power. And compatibilizers like esters or alkylated naphthalene are needed to keep additives in solution.

Evonik’s NUFLUX™ technology, a combination of Group III base oil and Evonik’s VISCOBASE synthetic base fluid, is a very cost-efficient synthetic base oil concept:

It provides performance similar to incumbent PAO formulations
VISCOBASE™ synthetic base fluid exhibits excellent additive dissolving power.
NUFLUX™ technology achieves enhanced performance, using industry-accepted additive systems used with PAO and mineral oils.

Resource Efficiency DYNAVIS® technology

Evonik’s DYNAVIS® technology for hydraulic fluids, through extensive field tests as well as through intensive laboratory analysis, has proven itself to be a powerful tool in saving energy, achieving more power with less fuel and boosting productivity. In an extensive series of field tests, and in a variety of mobile, off-highway construction equipment, fuel savings from five to 20 percent have been achieved.
