ESD in industrial systems has been gaining attention due to increasing appearance of low conductive mineral and ash free oils. It is clear that ESD as manifested by arcing anywhere in the system is highly undesirable. However, setting limits on ESD magnitude has proven difficult, due to the absence of industry standards, measurement techniques or even appropriate instrumentation. This is troubling when discharges on the order of tens of kilovolts have been observed. At these magnitudes, incidences of fire can occur under certain conditions and have been reported. We present a proven and independently certified method for measurement of ESD phenomena under normal operating conditions. The method also allows for comparison of field and laboratory data. We present several examples of ESD measurements in hydraulic and lubricating systems under normal operating conditions and provide methods for the analysis of the observed signals to facilitate their interpretation.
What you will learn: The seminar will review the basic physical principles governing the onset electrostatic discharge phenomena in hydraulic and lubricating systems. Fundamental principles leading to charge separation between the oils and filter media will be discussed. The impact of new Group II and Group III oil formulations will be discussed. Measurement methods under controlled laboratory conditions as well as typical on-site measurements will be compared and contrasted. Similarly, the reasons for accelerated antioxidant additive depletion and varnish formation as a result of ESD in typical applications will be described. Finally, a solution alleviating electrostatic charging in hydraulic and lubricating systems through selection of suitable materials for filter element construction will be provided.
Dr. Duchowski graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, B.C. in 1985 and obtained his doctorate at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA in 1990. From 1992 to 2004, he held the positions of Principal Scientist in the Scientific and Laboratory Services Department and Vice President of Technology in the Machinery & Equipment Division at Pall Corporation. In 2005 he moved to HYDAC Technology Corporation where he currently holds the position of Director of Technology Development. His projects focus on the effects of physical and chemical contaminants on the performance of hydraulic and lubricating systems and on the fluids employed in those systems. Dr. Duchowski is a Fellow of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) and an STLE Certified Lubrication Specialist and Oil Monitoring Analyst, Levels I and II.
