October 2013 Section Newsletter
  • Congratulate fellow section leaders on their recent awards at the Annual Meeting: Rita Mickle received the Vic Joll Award, and Large/Small Section Awards were given to the Philadelphia Section and Hamilton Section!
  • Fundraising Ideas: stuck on how to raise some funds either for your section, or for your scholarship program? Look no further! Includes ideas for your golf tournament as well as some new ways to fundraise. Feel free to submit your ideas to Kara Sniegowski at ksniegowski@stle.org, or on our LinkedIn group page.
  • Microvolunteering: among many other ideas generated at a past section leader's session (held at the Annual Meeting), microvolunteering was mentioned, and it's a way to pull in new members, young members, or members who haven't gotten involved yet. Here's another article that talks about why you should use it, and another that provides some examples of microvolunteering roles.
  • New Social Event Ideas:
    • As we come into fall (and depending on your local weather), you could consider hosting a picnic, a cookout, or a similar outdoor event. No matter what you choose, you could consider inviting spouses, or making it a potluck - so everyone gets to eat without the cost of catering. The section could provide the drinks (charging a fee to make some money), or you could find other ways to make money. For instance, you could rent out bags games, washer toss, or other lawn games (lawn Jenga looks interesting!).
    • If the weather isn't conducive, you could try hosting a trivia night. Trivia night could also be a fundraising event - where you charge a nominal fee to take part in the fun, and then have a 50/50 split of the money with the winner/winning team. This way, the section makes some money, and members get to have a fun time! And, if you get your board members together to create the questions, it could also serve as a refresher for industry information, or a way to learn something new about an unfamiliar topic.
  • Transitioning Your Board - check out these articles by Cynthia d'Amour, which will help you make the transition from your old slate of officers to your new one!
  • Section Leader Survey: if you didn't have a chance to fill out the survey, please take a moment to do so. We're collecting information so we can determine what resources to offer that could make your lives easier.
  • Important Dates for Section Leaders - see this calendar for events, due dates and anything else relevant to you as a section leader or volunteer. Did we miss something? Let us know!
  • Connect on LinkedIn - don't forget to join the discussion with your fellow section leaders on LinkedIn, where you'll find a group just for you. New ideas, best practices and tips are posted every week! If you haven't joined LinkedIn yet, no worries. We have a quick how-to for you to set up an account and get started in the group.
  • Scholarships: if you're offering a scholarship this year, let us know. We can post details on our website and/or send out an email announcement. Scholarships are a great way to grow your future membership and create contacts with students interested in the field. And, STLE HQ matches the amount you award to the students, making the scholarship twice as valuable!
  • Education Workshop Ideas: see this list (2012-13 program year) or this list (2011-12 program year) of sections that offered educational programming, and get ideas from their offerings. For example, the Detroit Section is now offering educational programs every month instead of technical meetings. It's been a great draw for new and established members!
  • Meeting Topic Ideas: Stuck on topic ideas for this year? Click here to download the list of 2013 meeting topics or click here for the list of 2012 meeting topics. If you haven't submitted your event calendar yet, please do so, so we can post and advertise your upcoming events in TLT and on our website. If you're stuck for ideas, you may also want to try a membership survey, where you ask members what topics they'd like to see for the coming year. We can use our SurveyMonkey account to digitize the survey, so you can send it out to your distribution list, so if this if of interest, contact us.
  • Great Idea of the Month: If you offer a door or attendance prize, consider mixing up how attendees can be entered and/or receive the gift. For instance, offer a prize to the first (non-volunteer) attendee to check in, to the person who has attended the most meetings that year (or so far), a random drawing of all those who have checked in/attended (drawn at the end of the meeting), or award/draw from those who have birthdays that month, or STLE-related anniversaries (i.e. 5 year members).
  • Quotable Quotes: "The best section meeting I ever attended was the one where I learned something new, which happens at almost every meeting!"
  • Section Leader Highlight: Marty Graves, Chair of the Houston Section, discusses his transition from the Chicago to the Houston Section, some new things they're trying out at their section, including their scholarship process, ways to attract student and new members, and a new social event they're offering this year!
  • Did you know? You can look up all the members in your section via the Membership Directory. Simply login at www.stle.org, click "Member Directory" and then find the "Section" dropdown and select your section. This allows your members to connect with others in your area, and allows you to verify your section roster with the click of a mouse!
  • Samples & Templates - log on to www.stle.org, and visit the MyCommunities tab (on the left hand panel of your profile). Once there, go to the Section Leader's group and you'll find an ever-growing list of templates and samples submitted by other sections. We'd love to add to that list, so please forward any documents and resources you couldn't live without, and that make your life easier as a section leader. By doing this, you'll help other sections and may attract more volunteers, when they see what kind of support is available.
    • Most recently posted items include: Chicago's Membership Directory (a great way to raise funds locally), Cincinnati, Chicago, and Houston Education Brochures/Flyers, Philadelphia's Member Survey, and a template for calculating education course costs and tuition needed per attendee (sort by date to see the most recent documents).
    • Samples needed: education workshop brochures/flyers, meeting checklists (i.e. set up the projector/computer, open registration desk, etc.), and scholarship criteria.
