March 2013 Section Newsletter
  • Using & Repurposing Content to Create Added Value - see what more you can offer attendees to create a lasting impression, with minimal effort.
  • Education Workshop Tips/Best Practices: an outline of what you need to do before, during and after an education workshop. What are your best practices?
  • 25 Instructional Strategies - this blog post covers 25 new formats you could try at your section to mix things up. Note: this link takes you to an external site.
  • Scholarships: if you're offering a scholarship this year, let us know. We can post details on our website and/or send out an email announcement. Scholarships are a great way to grow your future membership and create contacts with students interested in the field. And, STLE HQ matches the amount you award to the students, making the scholarship twice as valuable!
  • 2013 Education Workshops: see this list for sections currently offering educational programming, and get ideas from their offerings. For instance, the Houston Section offers multiple tracks to attract different audiences - something you could try next year, if your membership expresses interest! You can also take a look at 2012's offerings.
  • 2013 Meeting Topics: click here to download the list of meeting topics that have been offered so far to get ideas for the coming program year. You may also want to try a membership survey, where you ask members what topics they'd like to see for the coming year. We can use our SurveyMonkey account to digitize the survey, so you can send it out to your distribution list, so if this if of interest, contact us.
  • Great Idea of the Month: Two new formats for your monthly meetings - 1. Turn your monthly technical meetings into mini educational sessions. Depending on your membership, you could target the basics, or try covering advanced concepts related to a variety of topics. This comes from our Detroit Section, where they've had great success with this idea - take a look at their calendar to see what they've offered so far. This month, they'll be covering metalworking fluids. 2: Host a technical discussion on an article that appeared in TLT. You can have a presenter on the topic to cover some of the basics, and then have attendees break into groups to discuss implications, challenges, etc., with the speaker rotating and spending time with each group. You finish up the session by coming back together and providing a recap of each group discussion.
  • Great Idea of the Month (Bonus!): Host a March Madness Competition - have members fill out basketball brackets and offer prizes for the winner. Sponsors could offer an item, you could provide free attendance to an upcoming meeting, your golf outing or social, or even provide a free year of membership. This could encourage members to get involved and talk about STLE with others.
  • Quotable Quotes: "I joined STLE at the beginning of my career. My colleagues were active members of STLE. It was an opportunity to meet others of common technical interests." - STLE Member
  • Section Leader Highlight: Bill Tuszynski provides information on how to partner with other societies and surveying your members. Note: If you'd like to survey your members, just let us know! We can create an electronic version of your prepared survey and distribute via email to those in our database.
  • Important Dates for Section Leaders - see this calendar for events, due dates and anything else relevant to you as a section leader or volunteer. Did we miss something? Let us know!
    • Get your Outstanding Section Award applications filled out and sent in to Judy. The deadline was March 4, but you still have a short grace period - don't get left behind!
  • Innovation at My Section - article summarizing the content discussed at the 2012 STLE Annual Meeting Section Leader's Session, which featured a panel discussion with current section volunteers covering current best practices and new ideas and innovations for your section.
  • Samples & Templates - log on to www.stle.org, and visit the MyCommunities tab (on the left hand panel of your profile). Once there, go to the Section Leader's group and you'll find an ever-growing list of templates and samples submitted by other sections. We'd love to add to that list, so please forward any documents and resources you couldn't live without, and that make your life easier as a section leader. By doing this, you'll help other sections and may attract more volunteers, when they see what kind of support is available.
    • Three new items posted: Chicago's Education Brochure/Flyer, Philadelphia's Member Survey, and a template for calculating education course costs and tuition needed per attendee (sort by date to see the most recent documents).
  • Connect on LinkedIn - don't forget to join the discussion with your fellow section leaders on LinkedIn, where you'll find a group just for you. New ideas, best practices and tips are posted every week! If you haven't joined LinkedIn yet, no worries. We have a quick how-to for you to set up an account and get started in the group.
  • Upcoming Education: Annual Meeting Section Leader's Session to be held May 5, 2013 in Detroit, MI. The session will cover personality types and how they apply to your section and volunteers, and is called Personality Assessment: This Job Is For The Birds! and will be led by Jean K. Becker.
