STLE Presidential Awards Program

STLE has available two academic awards through its Presidential Awards Program, the E. Richard Booser Scholarship for undergraduate students and the E. Elmer Klaus Fellowship for graduate students.

These awards are administered by the STLE Presidential Council, and are meant to encourage students to pursue an advanced degree or a career in tribology or lubrication engineering by subsidizing a research project related to the field.

Application Process:

  • Download  and complete the appropriate application, which is available online begining the week of July 1.  Include a letter of endorsement on official school letterhead, signed by your faculty advisor, and include a current transcript including grade point average.  Email all documents to The Presidential Council 
  • The deadline for application submissions is the week of December 1
  • Award recipients will be notified by March 31.
  • Initial award checks presented the week of May 5th
  • Research reports are due by January 15, and will be published in the upcoming July TLT.  Final award payment will be mailed after reports are received.

Reporting Requirement:
The student is expected to submit a report by January 15, summarizing the research and the value of the experience in providing incentive for further course work, research, or a career in tribology or lubrication engineering.

For Graduate Students – the E. Elmer Klaus Fellowship


Description: 
The purpose of the E. Elmer Klaus Fellowship is to encourage graduate students to pursue graduate degrees or a career in tribology by providing the opportunity for them to participate in tribology research. The student must be enrolled in a graduate engineering or science curriculum and should have completed no more than two years beyond the bachelor degree at the time the research is started

The fellowship provides $5000 to the student and $500 to the department in which the student will perform the research. $4000 will be awarded at the beginning of the research and $1000 after the report summarizing the research is received by the Presidential Council. Students will be selected on the basis of grade point average of the applicant, relevance of the research to tribology, and quality of the proposed research experience.

For Undergraduate Students – the E. Richard Booser Scholarship

Description: 
The purpose of the Richard Booser Scholarship is to encourage undergraduate students to pursue graduate degrees or a career in tribology by providing the opportunity for them to participate in tribology research. The student must be enrolled in an engineering or science curriculum.

The scholarship provides $4000 to the student and $500 to the department in which the student will perform the research. $3000 will be awarded at the beginning of the research and $1000 when the report summarizing the research is received by the Presidential Council. Students will be selected on the basis of grade point average of the applicant, relevance of the research to tribology, and quality of the proposed research experience.
