Influence of Grease Properties on the Tribological Behavior of Radial Lip Seals

Most rolling bearings are lubricated with grease. Therefore a reliable sealing of the lubricating grease with low friction is essential. However, the tribological behavior of grease lubricated radial lip seals is poorly understood. But the knowledge of this behavior is required to optimize the design. Radial lip seals according to ISO 6194 [1] are complex tribological systems. Hence tests were done using a simplified experimental set up (ring-on-disc set up) instead of a complex sealing system.
