Experimental Validation of Fluid Film Simulation of a Hydraulic U-cup Seal

Hydraulic rod seals are very important components of hydraulic systems since they prevent leakage of oil into the environment. In the past decades, the design of these seals has evolved and with increasing understanding of the fundamental sealing mechanisms, the shapes of the seals have become more complex [1]. Nevertheless, hydraulic rod seals have been rather neglected in scientific literature, most likely due to the seal flexibility which makes simulation and experimental analysis of seals more difficult than for example of roller bearings.
