Online Certificate Courses
An online course is an opportunity for you to get the education we provide when you are not able to travel to another location, but still allows you to get the education you need. You can take the course while you are at work, at home, or even while you are traveling. Online courses allow for you to take the entire course on your schedule, at your desk, at your own pace. As long as you have an internet connection, you can get your continuing education.

You can take the course from start to finish in one day, or you can pause and come back to the course at another point. An online course is the solution to continuing education while not interrupting your work and your schedule.

The key difference between the online certificate course and the online short course is that the certificate course is more interactive. It is interactive in a number of ways. First, the course requires your participation in moving the content forward. Second, the course poses questions before, during and after the presentation of material requiring the most involvement and thought. Coupled with the questions, there are practical applications and examples of the course content, which provides variation in content and presentation. Third, the course modules (or sections of the course) have their own assessments at the end of the module, which you must pass in order to reach the final assessment. These questions get you to apply the information you have just learned, and allow you to demonstrate your learning and progress through the course.

The course is called a Certificate Course because it ends with a Final Exam (assessment) on the course content. If you pass this exam, you will receive a certificate which signifies that you have taken the course and learned the essential content. This course is an online version of our face-to-face Certificate Courses that vary by topic and location.

Online Short Courses
This type of course is very similar to a webinar in that it is a presentation of material with an accompanying audio explanation of the content. The course does not have questions or assessments, like the Online Certificate Course, but it does have accompanying course materials, which are yours for future reference.

This type of course is designed for those looking for general information on the topic and do not need a record of that learning. An online short course is not as formal as the full Online Certificate Course, but it does provide essential information most likely for someone new to the field or content area.

Webinars
A webinar, or a web-based seminar, is a presentation, lecture, workshop or seminar that is transmitted over the web. A webinar is interactive because of the exchange of information between the presenter and the audience, and even among audience members. These are typically live events because they occur in real time, on a specific date and time, last for a set duration (usually 60 minutes), and follow an agenda. The live event allows the audience to ask questions of the presenter and get answers in response. The presenter speaks and is able to explain slides and information while listeners tune in to what is being presented on the screen. Participants are thus attending a seminar without having to go to a physical location. These live events are recorded and made available post-event for future reference.

The Industry Insight series of webinars is designed for a diverse audience who are in a variety of industries, careers, and job functions. If a topic is of interest to you, you are invited to join us. Our goal is to provide the most up-to-date information available to alert those in the industry of any developments or alterations that will have an impact on their career. Industry Insight is your instructional brief on the latest industry developments but also allows you to make the most of your time.

Annual Meeting Courses
These courses are offered yearly at the Annual Meeting, which is held in mid-May. These one-day technical education courses are taught by professionals who have in-depth knowledge of current trends in their respective fields.

Each course is led by a Course Chair. In addition, each course will have five to ten different instructors who will give talks, providing you with the most topical exposure and a variety of expertise. Each instructor handles a module (or subtopic) in the course. For example, the Basic Lubrication 103 course includes modules such as Lubrication Fundamentals, Test Methods, Base Oils, Additives, Bearings, Hydraulics, Gears, Synthetics and Grease.

The course content depends on the title and the course level. Some, like the Basics of Lubrication 103, are held annually and do not have any prerequisites. These are basic, introductory courses. Other courses vary from year to year as STLE continues to provide the most up-to-date information. We are constantly revamping our educational offerings for your benefit.

See the Annual Meeting page for more information on upcoming courses.

Local Section Courses
Many local STLE sections conduct education days during the year, using a format similar to the Annual Meeting courses. These courses follow the one-day schedule and are led by professionals with in-depth knowledge of the topic. The topics and course level will vary by section and section members or audience.

See the Local Section Calendar for more information on upcoming courses.

Certificate Courses
These are exactly like the online certificate courses, except they are done at a physical location. In these Certificate Courses, you are able to earn a certificate of completion at the end of the course, if you take the course exam which is offered at the end of the course. If you pass this exam, you will receive the certificate which signifies that you have taken the course and learned the essential content.

These courses are held at a physical location, at a certain date and time, and for a set duration (typically 1-3 days) and utilize one or more instructors to facilitate learning. These courses combine the latest technical training with the opportunity to earn credentials that document your understanding of the course concepts.

See the Course Description page for more information on upcoming courses.
