What is STLE University?
Welcome! STLE University is a centralized location for your professional education. STLE U includes many different educational offerings including both online and in-person education. Our online offerings include online certificate courses, online short courses, and webinars. Our in-person education opportunities include the Annual Meeting courses, Local Section courses, Certificate Courses and On-Site Courses.
STLE is known for its education, and previously, that had been in-person opportunities where students and instructors came together at a location (for instance, at our Annual Meeting or local courses). STLE, with the help of The Learning Studio, conducted a survey of members and their impressions of our education.
Members appreciated our in-person education, and because of this, members had the desire for more opportunities throughout the year. In order to meet those needs, we developed STLE University, which provides both educational options: in-person and online. For the online education, we needed to develop both the courses and a way to house them. The housing is referred to as an LMS, which you can read more about below.
The Society of Tribologists & Lubrication Engineers (STLE) is considered to be the foremost provider of non-commercial technical education to the field. Our goal is the dissemination of knowledge to further the science of tribology and lubrication engineering. The STLE University is a structure that allows users an easy way to access all the educational materials that we offer and to map out an educational plan. If you need information or knowledge, STLE and STLE University are here to provide direction to your career and education.
For the online education, we needed a place to house the various products (which include online certificate courses, short courses and webinars). This housing, also called an LMS, or Learning Management System, is able to house a variety of formats and has a number of capabilities that benefit the user. The LMS serves as the “library” for all our online education offerings, which you can fill with your choice of educational products.
The LMS is a platform that provides a way to track your progress through individual education opportunities. It shows your progress through the material as well as your scores on the assessments for each course. The LMS allows you to start, pause and resume your different educational products on your schedule. The LMS even has the capability to demonstrate your efforts and document your learning by providing certificates and transcripts for courses taken, in progress, and completed. The LMS is a centralized location for all your educational materials that is personalized to you. You can access it anywhere, anytime as long as you have a computer and an internet connection.
Essentially, the LMS allows you to take the online education, while customizing our offerings to your needs.
To access your Learning Management System (LMS), you need to sign in with your STLE website login/member ID. The benefit of the LMS is that you only have to sign in once to access the STLE home page, the LMS, and our educational offerings. Once you log in, click on the “STLE University” tab on the left hand panel. You will arrive at your Training Menu and can proceed to take a course from there.
You do not need to be an STLE member to attend STLE University. However, you do get significant discounts on our educational products if you are a member. If you are not an STLE member, you will need to create a non-member account on our website to gain access to the University. See below for more information on how to do that.
If you already have a username and password (you are either an STLE member or you signed up previously on our website as a non-member): visit the STLE home page. Click on “Members Only” at the top of the page or “Log In” on the left hand side of the page. Once you are there, you will need to log in. Enter your member number or user ID and password. Your login is your member ID. If you do not remember your password, there is a general format that you can use if you know your member number. Your password is the first two letters of your last name followed by your member ID number. If you have forgotten your login information, contact the STLE office at (847) 825-5536. We can look it up for you.
If you do not have a username and password, you will need to create an account. Signing up on the website is free of charge, you do not need to be a member to join the website. To create an account, you should start by clicking on the “Log In” link on the left hand panel, or the “Members Only” link at the top of the home page. Once there, on the left hand panel, you will see the option “Create an Account.” Click on that link. What different offerings (topics or formats) will be available in the LMS?
STLE developed three types of online education that are available in the STLE University. These include: certificate courses, short courses, and webinars.
A Certificate Course is a complete, stand-alone education course that addresses various topics. The course is comprised of a varying number of modules (usually around four to five) that address a subtopic within that course. This course has assessments which measure learning and provide progress indicators. This course also has reading and/or reference materials for course participants.
A Short Course is a recorded presentation or talk that is accompanied by visual slides. They are shorter than the live webinars, falling in a range from twenty to thirty minutes per module and each course varies with the number of modules. This course has additional reading and/or reference materials for course participants.
The live webinar series, Industry Insight, is a planned series of webinars designed to provide information on various industries within tribology and lubrication engineering, while also keeping participants on top of new developments and best practices in the industry.

For in-person educational offerings, when you purchase, you will be registered for that event. You will need to plan ahead for any and all travel requirements and expenses, which are separate from course admission, and are your responsibility. We will send you periodic notices about the course, content, and if/when there are course requirements, such as bringing a laptop.
You can submit content, speaker, and general suggestions on our Suggestion page. We encourage you to be active in this process so we can continue to customize our education to your needs.
