Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants for Vessel General Permit Applications

Where: STLE University, live webinar event broadcast to your computer

When: Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 12-1:00 p.m., with optional Q&A from 1-1:30 p.m. Central Time

On December 19th 2013 the new ‘United States Environment Protection Agency Vessel General Permit (VGP)’ came into effect, and sees new restrictions placed on the use and discharge of lubricants used on board commercial vessels which operate in US coastal waters.

The VGP provides guidance on three levels for lubricants:

  1. All lubricants which are used in an oil-sea interface must be environmentally friendly and in compliance with the EPA’s VGP guidelines or compliant with an approved international eco-labelling scheme, unless technically infeasible. Vessel discharges which must comply with this new requirement include: controllable pitch propeller and thruster hydraulics, and discharges from: paddle wheel propulsion, stern tubes, thruster bearings, stabilizers, rudder bearings, azimuth thrusters, propulsion pod lubrication, wire rope, and mechanical equipment subject to immersion.
  2. EPA strongly encourages the use of environmentally acceptable lubricants in all above deck equipment.
  3. Where vessels utilize two stroke engines, environmentally acceptable lubricants must be used unless technically infeasible.

This presentation will discuss in detail the VGP definition of an environmentally acceptable lubricant and will also compare and contrast the other eco-label schemes by which lubricants can be accredited and are also accepted for use under VGP.

This presentation will also provide an overview of the types of base fluids that are permitted to be used, focussing on the general characteristics of each type of base fluid.
