Abstract
This webinar is intended as an overview of the synthetic base oils that are currently in use. A brief history of synthetics will be discussed to aid our understanding of the reason synthetics came about and why they are currently used. Physical and chemical properties from early mineral oils to the tailored properties of synthetics will be highlighted. The advantages and disadvantages of several synthetic base oils will be reviewed with regard to current and potential applications. Furthermore, there are several new products that have come to the market within the last year such as polyalphaolefins and polyalkalene glycols, and some of these will be discussed. Lastly, we will look at future trends in lubricant applications as it applies to synthetics as problem solvers.
