STLE Chicago Section Technical Meeting
Topic: Tribological Properties of Polymerized Vegetable Oils and Esters and Their Comparison to Chlorinated Paraffins in Metalworking Applications
Presenter: Dr. Selim M. Erhan, Afton Corporation
Date/Time: Thursday, October 18, 2012
Abstract
The larger molecules such as polymeric vegetable oils and esters are multifunctional additives in metalworking fluids and impart good low foaming properties and coupling effects. But their most notable contributions are in lubricity. Their performance is especially important as there is an effort to replace chlorinated paraffin's in performance and cost. This paper will focus on the tribological performance of polymeric vegetable oils, and various esters and compare their performance to the performance of chlorinated paraffin's using instruments such as the High Frequency Reciprocating Rig, Hille Press, Reichert, 4-Ball Wear and Microtap.
Biography
Dr Selim Erhan taught for eight years after graduating University and has been in industrial applications for the last 22 years. As a Senior Scientist for Afton Chemical Corporation/Polartech he has worked on additives for metalworking fluids and other industrial applications for the last 5 years. Prior to that Dr Erhan was the Technical Manager of the Bedford Park Plant of Georgia Pacific Resins Inc., responsible for metalworking fluid additives and additives for other industrial applications. Dr Erhan has also worked as a Research Scientist at D. A. Stuart Company (lubricants and metalworking fluid formulations) and at the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S, Department of Agriculture, where he investigated industrial applications for new biomaterials in rubber additives, agricultural sprays, solid and liquid lubricant additives for MWF and drilling fluids.
Dr Erhan has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Istanbul, Turkey, and a Ph.D. in Organic-Polymer Chemistry from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He has 25 publications and 4 patents.
