STLE Chicago Section Technical Meeting
Topic: Defoamers for Water Based Metal Working Fluids: Theory, Formulation, and Selection
Presenter: Dr. Steven Y. Chan, Munzing NA LLP
Date/Time: Thursday, September 20th 2012
Foam is an undesired consequence of many industrial processes where liquid formulations are involved. To control the foam, defoamers/antifoams are utilized as a component of the formulations and/or added as needed when foam occurs. Due to the large number of variables in formulations, the most effective and compatible defoamer for a specific system is typically determined empirically. Furthermore, defoamers are often a “black box” to the user, since defoamers are usually proprietary mixtures. In order to help the end user to understand defoamers, this presentation describes the basic surface science for foam stabilization and defoamer action. In addition, the presentation provides information on general defoamer compositions, performance, and selection.
Dr. Steven Chan is the R&D manager for Munzing, located in Bloomfield, NJ. He has been with the company for over 2 years. Steven obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from City University of New York. He is an expert in surface and colloidal science and has over 20 years of industrial experience with defoamers, surfactants, dispersants, and polymers in metal working fluids, lubricants, coatings, inks and adhesives. Steven owes several patents and published many papers in different industries.
Remark: Door prizes will also be drawn at the conclusion of the Technical Presentation. You need to be present at the drawing in order to win!
