STLE Chicago Section Meeting

Thursday, September 19, 2013

05:15 PM - 08:15 PM

Join us for our first technical meeting of the year where Christine McInnis will be giving a talk on Metalworking Fluid Biocides.

STLE Chicago Section Technical Meeting

Topic: Metalworking Fluid Biocides: What They Are, How They Work, and How to Use Them

Presenter: Christine McInnis, PhD, Dow Microbial Control

Date/Time: Thursday, September 19, 2013

Abstract

Metalworking fluids (MWF) provide an excellent environment for the growth of various types of microorganisms. Effective microbial control is required to maintain fluid quality, tool life, and to minimize potential adverse health effects from microbial contaminants.  Microorganisms are frequently monitored in the free floating (planktonic) form with dip slides. However, microorganisms also can form biofilms, which may cause microbial induced corrosion and provide a constant source of microbial contamination. Since it is not as common to test for biofilms, they can go unnoticed for extended periods of time. This presentation will discuss methods of monitoring for biofilms in a metalworking system as well as options for removing and controlling biofilms in metalworking fluid systems. In addition, an overview of the MWF biocides in general will be given along with best practices for using them.

Speaker Biography

Christine (Christie) McInnis is a customer application specialist for Dow Microbial Control. In this role, she is responsible for technical support and development for biocides utilized in water treatment and metalworking applications. McInnis joined Dow in 2011 after earning her Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also received a dual B.A. degree in chemistry and chemical biology and biological sciences from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. McInnis has received a U.S. patent for non-native quorum sensing modulators and is the author of several technical articles. In addition, McInnis is active in a variety of industry associations, including the American Chemical Society, Association for Water Technologies, and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers. She is located in Spring House, Pennsylvania.
