This presentation builds on the foundation laid during the previous two MWF Microbiology webinars: MWF Microbiology Basics and Condition Monitoring of MWFs. However, it is also useful as a stand-alone program.
During this webinar, Dr. Passman will provide a very brief overview of the Basics and Condition Monitoring webinars as a refresher for those who have participated in the earlier webinars and a means of bringing newcomers up to speed.
He’ll then discuss the four primary building blocks of cost-effective microbial contamination control:
Dr. Passman will discuss how system design can contribute substantially to causing or minimizing uncontrolled microbial contamination in MWF systems. He’ll then explain the role that good industrial hygiene plays in reducing the magnitude and frequency of microbial contamination getting into MWF systems. Having provided detailed CM guidance in the previous webinar, D. Passman will address systems management aspects of CM in this webinar.
The concept of treatment includes both non-chemical and chemical technologies for preventing microbial contamination from getting out of control. Non-chemical technologies include a variety of systems designed to use energy to kill microbes. Dr. Passman will review the current state of the art of these technologies. Chemical technologies include the practice of formulating bioresistant MWF and the use of antimicrobial pesticides (also known as microbicides or biocides). Dr. Passman will explain the differences between bioresistant and biocidal chemicals and will describe a strategic process for evaluating products from their bioresistance and microbicidal properties. Integral to this discussion will be an explanation of the various options for microbicide use. Participants in this webinar will gain a broad appreciation of the factors that contribute to effective microbial contamination control in MWF and MWF systems.
Dr. Passman is an STLE Fellow and Certified Metalworking Fluids Specialist with 35 years’ experience in environmental-industrial microbiology. Since 1973, Dr. Passman has conducted research and consulted to government and private industry on topics as diverse as composting municipal sewage sludge, U.S. EPA criteria for various groups of toxic substances in fresh-water systems, microbially enhanced oil recovery, and microbial contamination control in industrial process-fluids. He is a member of numerous professional and trade organizations including ASTM and STLE. Within STLE, he is currently the Chair of the Education and Certification Harmonization Ad Hoc Committee. Dr. Passman is Chair of ASTM Subcommittee E.34.50 Health and Safety of Metalworking Fluids, Vice-chair of ASTM Committee E34 Occupational Health and Safety and is an active member of E.35.15 Antimicrobial Pesticides. He has drafted ASTM Standards for each of these committees. Dr. Passman has twice received STLE’s Wilber Deutsch Memorial Award for writing excellence, and is a recipient of STLE’s P.M. Ku Award. He has more than 40 publications to his name.
