Topic: Application of Fluids in High Pressure Hydraulic Systems

When it comes to hydraulic fluids, the operating practices of yesterday are long gone. Steady and dependable, hydraulic fluid technology remained somewhat stagnant for decades. Today, the pressure is on hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems are expected to deliver optimum performance while operating at increasingly higher pressures, temperatures, and tougher conditions. When selecting hydraulic fluid it’s important to consider viscosity, compressibility, wear resistance, oxidation stability, thermal stability, filterability, rust & corrosion protection, foam resistance, demulsibility, hydrolytic stability, and seal compatibility. On the other side of the fence are the many components and system designs available to us. Pumps, valves, actuators and other components are being built from newer alloys with better wear characteristics. Finite element analysis and multi-axis CNC machining are also allowing parts to be made to tighter tolerances that require cleaner and cooler fluids.
Attilio is the Chief Engineer at Lynch Fluid Controls and has been a pivotal member of the Lynch Team for the past 20 years. Attilio holds an Engineering Degree from the University of Toronto. His 30 years of hydraulic design & real-world application experience, has resulted in a wealth of valuable knowledge in how to apply, and more importantly how not to apply, fluids in high pressure hydraulic systems.
