Synthetic Metal Removal Fluids

Instructor: Alan Eckard

Where: STLE University, live webinar event broadcast to your computer

When: Wednesday, Septmeber 17, 2014 at 12-1:00 p.m., with optional Q&A from 1-1:30 p.m. Central Time

Cost: $39 for members, $59 for non-members

This presentation will explore the definitions of synthetic metal removal fluids (MRFs), with discussion of typical compositions, applications, attributes, trends in usage and new technology that is emerging. It is generally accepted that “synthetic” as applied to lubricants of all types means petroleum oil free. In some cases it may be further defined in metalworking situations as compositions which are chemical solutions of components in water. We will consider all types of petroleum free water dilutable MRFs for this discussion. Synthetic MRFs have been in use for many decades and offer certain advantages that justify their use which include excellent visibility during metalworking operations and typically low foaming tendency. There are also inherent disadvantages such as limited corrosion protection and incompatibility with most EP additives which may limit lubricity. These issues and methods of dealing with them will be considered. MRF technology is continuing to evolve and there are some interesting developments that will be presented that have potential to improve the functionality of synthetic fluids.

Presenter Biography

Dr. Eckard received a BSc. in chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Liverpool, England. He was a research fellow and later a Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Keele, England and later returned to North America as a research fellow at the University of Toronto. He worked for Pennwalt (Atofina) in the specialty chemicals group as a research director and product manager prior to assuming senior technical positions at D A Stuart of Canada, a manufacturer of metalworking and finishing products. He was subsequently associated with Witco Corp (now Chemtura Corp) as director of research for their petroleum specialties group and is currently Director of Global Technology for Monroe Fluid Technology, in Hilton , New York. With over 30 years experience in formulation technology and additive chemistry, Dr Eckard has been at the forefront of technology for lubrication, corrosion protection and surface finishing for metalworking and fabrication of metals. He holds numerous patents and has published widely in various trade and technical journals and is currently affiliated with the New York section of STLE and is a certified Metalworking Fluids specialist.
