Introduction to Group II and Group III Ashless Oils and Their Impact on Hydraulic and Lubricating System Operation

Overview/Abstract: The phasing out of the Group I oils, many of which contained metal-based additives, and the introduction of Group II and Group III oils, many of which contain organic-only additives, has brought about many new phenomena previously not apparent or considered in typical hydraulic and lubricating systems. The range of these phenomena is indeed quite broad (and interesting) and may include everything from electrostatic discharge, varnish formation, novel additive interaction and degradation mechanisms and so on. Many aspects of these new behavioral mechanisms have yet to be characterized in greater detail and often require the introduction of new analytical techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry, measurements of electrical conductivity, X-ray emission and infra-red spectroscopic techniques, etc., in order to arrive at their proper understanding. This webinar will present several case studies from a wide variety of industrial applications where these new behavioral mechanisms have been observed and characterized.

From this webinar, you will learn what impact the introduction of new oil formulations will have on the performance of hydraulic and lubricating systems. In addition, the differences between the American Petroleum Institute’s (API) Group designation and the ISO 6743 will be compared and contrasted. New phenomena arising as a result of new oil formulations such as electrostatic discharge, varnish formation and thermal degradation pathways of some additives will be addressed. The application of advanced analytical tools and techniques for detection of these issues will be discussed. Finally, solutions, such as the employment of filter media resistant to electrostatic charging and the use of ion exchange for removal of contaminants derived from oil and additive degradation processes will be described.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Duchowski graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, B.C. in 1985 and obtained his doctorate at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA in 1990. From 1992 to 2004, he held the positions of Principal Scientist in the Scientific and Laboratory Services Department and Vice President of Technology in the Machinery & Equipment Division at Pall Corporation. In 2005 he moved to HYDAC Technology Corporation where he currently holds the position of Director of Technology Development. His projects focus on the effects of physical and chemical contaminants on the performance of hydraulic and lubricating systems and on the fluids employed in those systems. Dr. Duchowski is a Fellow of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) and an STLE Certified Lubrication Specialist and Oil Monitoring Analyst, Levels I and II.
