For nearly a century, metalworking fluid manufacturers have been mixing oil and water to provide lubrication and cooling for a multitude of machining processes. These metalworking fluid providers identify and utilize combinations of emulsifiers in order to create stable emulsions that meet their specific needs.
As many experienced metalworking fluid formulators can attest, designing an emulsifier system can be more of an art than a science. Formulators must find a balance between performance requirements, cost and availability of raw materials. A significant amount of market knowledge and expertise lies with scientists that have decades of experience in formulating metalworking fluids. As machining processes evolve and the workforce transitions with new, inexperienced workers coming into the field, we want to provide a two-part training series that covers the basics of emulsification, applications for water-based metalworking fluids and offer some understanding of how to bring more science into creating water-based metalworking fluids.
Emulsifiers 101: the first part of this series will include the basics of what an emulsion is, what chemistries and which fluid types are typically used in metalworking applications, what the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance is and why it is important to emulsifier selection.

Joe Schultz received an ACS-certified BS in Biochemistry from Benedictine University in Lisle, IL, in 1992. Following graduate course work in chemistry and a short period as a research technologist at Northwestern University Medical School, he spent 11 years at D.A. Stuart Company in Warrenville, IL. There he progressed through various roles in the Steel Mill Products Division including Chemist, Group Leader, Product Coordinator and Product Manager. He formulated and supported all varieties of specialty chemical products that are used in the production and finishing of steel worldwide. He then spent two years with the Application Engineers group of Castrol Industrial North America (Naperville, IL) providing high level field technical support for process chemicals for heavy industrial applications. Currently, Joe is Technical Services Chemist for Lubrizol’s Industrial Metalworking Additives group in Wickliffe, Ohio. He provides application and troubleshooting support for customers and end-users along with finished product formulating guidance.
Jennifer Ineman received her BS in Chemistry from Case Western Reserve University in 2003. She has been working in the lubricant industry for over 10 years, spending her entire career in various roles within The Lubrizol Corporation in Wickliffe, Ohio. These roles included performing as a chemist in the chemical synthesis group and as a formulator in metalworking research and development. While working as a formulator, Jennifer designed water-based packages and helped in the development of key emulsifier technologies. Currently, Jennifer is in a Product Management position and provides technical support to Lubrizol’s North American Sales Team and Customer base. Jennifer has written an article on Advanced Emulsifier Technology for Renewable Resource-Based Metalworking Fluids featured in the November 2011 issue of TLT. Jennifer has also made presentations on emulsifier technology at past STLE annual meetings.
