Abstract
Since the early 1980's, first in Europe and then in the 1990's in the US, biobased, then called biodegradable, lubricants have been in an uphill climb towards market acceptance. Today, some biobased lubricants have performance that equals or exceeds that of the conventional lubricants and yet they can be price competitive. These products also enjoy the support of the US government through the USDA "Biopreferred" program, designed to encourage use within the federal government. Biobased lubricants are growing in both use and acceptability in the market.
In this webinar, Professor Lou Honary, a leading exert and author in biobased lubricants, provides an overview of the technical and commercial opportunities in biobased lubricants and grease areas. Topics will include a brief historical review of the biobased lubricants and grease technologies, new developments in base vegetable or crop oils, base oil modifications including genetic enhancement of seed oils and chemical modifications of base oils, and advances in performance enhancing additives. There will also be a brief presentation on new processing technologies for manufacturing biobased products.
Biography
Dr. Lou A. T. Honary is a professor and the founding Director of the National Ag-Based Lubricants (NABL) Center at the University of Northern Iowa. He is considered to be one of the most knowledgeable researchers in the nation in the area of biobased and renewable lubricants. Honary is a member or has served as officer in several technical organizations including the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the National Fluid Power Association (NFPA), the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI), and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE). Dr. Honary has served on state and federal committees including USDA/DOE Biomass Research and Development Advisory Committee, and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack’s Life Sciences Advisory Committee.
Honary is the author of a book on biobased lubricants and greases and has authored three separate book chapters and numerous articles on biobased greases. He holds 8 US patents or joint patents with two additional pending. Honary has been engaged in development and commercialization of biobased rail curve greases since 1991 and several commercial greases on the market owe their origins to Honary's work.
