Wednesday, May 30, 2012
12:00 PM - 01:00 PM
This free webinar, sponsored by Bruker-Nano, will be given by Erik Novak, and will address surface corrosion and wear studies.
Surface Corrosion and Wear Studies: Rapid, Automated, Quantifiable
Presenter: Dr. Erik Novak, Director of the Advanced Technology Group, Bruker Optical and Stylus Metrology Products
Biography: Erik Novak joined Veeco Instruments (then Wyko Corporation) in 1993 as a student intern, and in 1998 received his Ph.D. from University of Arizona under Dr. Jim Wyant. Novak currently is Director of the advanced technology group for Bruker’s Optical and Stylus Metrology products. Novak holds numerous patents, has received two R&D 100 awards and has published more than 60 papers and book chapters relating to metrology, mostly in its practical implementation in industry.
Abstract
Both industrial and academic research groups are increasingly focused on improving lifetime and performance of components while minimizing costs. This has led to a dramatic rise in corrosion and tribology laboratories over the past decade as development and manufacturing requirements tighten. Many industries, including MEMS, orthopedics, petroleum, transportation, and green energy perform both corrosion and wear studies of critical components during the research phase and even as sample checks during production. Three-dimensional microscopes provide precise surface characterization and high levels of automation to minimize time to results. This talk will explore several such applications and the systems employed to quantify results in this field.
