STLE Chicago Section Technical Meeting
Topic: High Performance Lubricants from Renewable Hydrocarbon Basestocks
Presenter: Paula Vettel, Amyris Inc.
Date/Time: Thursday, April 18, 2013
High performance lubricants are needed for lubricant applications that operate under severe conditions. Until now, these lubricants were formulated with either highly refined or synthetic basestocks derived from petroleum sources. Vegetable oil lubricants can be used in environmentally sensitive areas, but suffer from deficits in cold-temperature flow and oxidation resistance. Renewable synthetic iso-paraffinic base oils can be produced from farnesene, a C15 branched chain hydrocarbon made by fermentation of sugars. These base oils combine desired high technical performance features such as high viscosity index, low-temperature fluidity, low volatility and oxidation resistance with environmentally friendly features such as renew-ability, biodegradability and low toxicity. This presentation will discuss the physical properties of the renewable base oils and give examples of excellent performance obtained with hydraulic fluids formulated with the renewable iso-paraffin base oils.
Dr. Paula Vettel has a Ph.D in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She had eleven years of experience with Amoco Petroleum Additives in the research and development of engine oil additives and formulation development and sixteen years research experience with D.A. Stuart Company in the areas of automotive and industrial gear oils, hydraulic fluids, straight oils, forging compounds, and mining hydraulic fluids. She has been with Amyris Inc, in Emeryville California for 2 years, developing new lubricants using renewable synthetic base oils. Dr. Vettel is an active member of ASTM, STLE, SAE, and ACS.
Remark: Door prizes will also be drawn at the conclusion of the Technical Presentation. You need to be present at the drawing in order to win!
