Title: Amines for Long-Life Metalworking Fluids
Presenter: Pat Brutto, The Dow Chemical Company
Patrick (Pat) Brutto is senior technical service and development specialist for Dow Consumer & Industrial Solution, based in Buffalo Grove, Ill. His responsibilities include leadership in the application of specialty additives for metalworking fluids, paints and coatings and other industrial applications.
Pat holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a master’s degree in chemistry from DePaul University Chicago. He is an active member of the Society of Tribologists & Lubrication Engineers, serving most recently as chairman of the Chicago Section STLE.
Formulating long-life MWFs is an increasing challenge, due to the reduced number of registered biocides and end user preferences (formaldehyde-free, etc.). Amine selection can significantly influence biocide performance and fluid longevity. This presentation will discuss the impact of amine and biocide choices on microbial resistance, corrosion control and pH control. The impact of tramp oil will also be discussed.
