Abstract
Heavy duty engine oils change periodically and systematically to serve the evolving engine technologies. Both oils and engine technologies are driven by changing emissions regulations. In order to allow engines to operate worldwide, consistent quality oils have to be available to allow engines to perform as designed under any circumstances and in any location worldwide. The API Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System ensure that licensed oils are of consistent quality and performance WW. Additionally, as more renewable and alternative fuels are introduced into the market, impact of these fuels on engine oils form of degradation and oil drain intervals need to remain on the radar of customers and engine manufacturers.
This webinar will describe the main factors responsible for oil quality and performance, the evolution of the API oil program, the API licensing process, HD oil API category currently under development and challenges for off-road engine oils. Additionally, brief introduction into the alternative fuels and impacts on engine oils will be presented.
Biography
Dr. Hind Abi-Akar has a Ph.D. in Materials Science and a Masters in Organic Chemistry from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She joined Caterpillar’s Advanced Materials Division in 1995 to work on R&D of corrosion and coatings. Hind currently is the Technical Expert at Caterpillar’s Fluids Engineering group focusing on technical development, specifications and publications of lubricants, fuels and alternative energy. Dr. Abi-Akar represents Caterpillar in the EMA, ASTM, and multiple external organizations. Hind holds multiple patents in various technical fields.
