STLE Detroit Section Meeting

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

04:30 PM - 07:00 PM

Joins the Detroit Section for a presentation on "Dynamic Sealing Shaft Texture," given by Matt Novak.

Detroit Section Meeting

Date: Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Title: Dynamic Sealing Shaft Texture

Presenter: Matt Novak, Bruker

Abstract

Surface characteristics play an integral role in the function of machined and moving (dynamic) systems, one specific example being the surfaces in contact in dynamic sealing systems.  When problems (leakage, for example) arise in a sealing system, it is challenging to pinpoint the root cause as there are many variables to address.  The system lubricant, the seal material and seal integrity, as well as the surface of the shaft that is in motion in the system all interact to create the dynamics of the sealing system.

In this presentation you will hear about accurately quantifying and reporting on surface roughness, texture and functional surface parameters, including shaft surface lead, during production of the shaft surfaces for sealing systems.  The concepts discussed may be new to some since the methods for characterization discussed will be non-contact, 3D optical profilometry using a 3D optical microscope system as opposed to traditional stylus based profilometry-based metrology.

Speaker Biography

Matt Novak, Ph.D., is Director of Technology and Applications Development with Bruker Nano Surfaces - Stylus and Optical Metrology (BNS - SOM).   To his role within Bruker, Matt brings a broad range of metrology and analytical instrument design experience since joining the professional work force in 1997. He has been an individual contributor and also led the design, assembly and test of instruments for optical metrology, non-invasive medical diagnostics, optical and Raman spectroscopy, as well as optical surface fabrication.  Most recently, Dr. Novak leads a team of talented scientists and engineers in the development of next generation platforms for advanced imaging and metrology, targeting industry partner needs in industrial production environments.
