STLE Toronto Section Meeting

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

05:30 PM - 08:15 PM

Join us for this section meeting where Brett Lubbock from Petro-Canada Lubricants will be presenting on Grease Rheometry.

Toronto Section Meeting

Topic: Grease Rheometry - Methods Development and Exploration of Low Temperature Capabilities

Date/Time: Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Presenter: Brett Lubbock, R&D Technologist - Fluid & Grease for Petro-Canada Lubricants Inc.

Abstract: Rheology is a new and emerging field of testing within the Lubricants industry. Traditional industry tests often define lubrication materials as fluid; however this not always the case. Using this new technique, we can now define important characteristics of materials that exist between the liquid and solid phases. Currently, this emerging technique is being used to model a wide range of grease testing procedures, from cone penetration and dropping points to oxidation stability to low temperature flow properties. With such a wide range of applications possible Rheology holds great promise for the future of the Lubricants industry.

This presentation will briefly touch on some of the theoretical concepts involved in this technique, as well as current applications in Petro Canada's grease development lab. The development of two low temperature characterization methods will be discussed, and result from these studies will be presented. Conclusions from the experiments, along with further steps for the future will be shared, further emphasizing the future potential of a fild barely in its infancy.
