STLE Cleveland Section Meeting
Date: Tuesday, February 11, 2014
Presenter: E. Jon Schnellbacher, Additives International
E. Jon Schnellbacher has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Eastern Michigan University, a MBA from the University of Toledo, and is a doctoral candidate at Lawrence Technological University. He is also past chairman and a long-time member of the Detroit section of STLE. Mr. Schnellbacher has spent 24 years as both a R&D chemist and manager in the chemical industry areas of: additives, coatings, rust preventives, metalworking fluids, and industrial cleaning compounds. E Jon Schnellbacher is the technical director for Additives International - Lockhart Chemical in Flint MI.
Rust preventives & Metalworking fluids may be used as in-process & removable rust preventive coatings for metals. With some exceptions, these removable fluids fit into three categories: water soluble, emulsions, or oil/solvent soluble fluids. Although metalworking fluids deal primarily with ferrous substrates, it is also common to see other non-ferrous metals. This talk will discuss why metals corrode and the various chemistries and inhibitor ingredients used for protecting metals. It will also briefly discuss some accelerated testing methods and the limitations in using these methods to predict real life results.
