Paul Michael’s career at MSOE started in 1987 when he began teaching in Fluid Power Institute professional education programs with Tom Wanke. He joined the Fluid Power Institute as a full time research chemist 6 years ago. Prior to joining MSOE, he was the Technical Director at Benz Oil, where he worked for 28 years. His specialty is Tribology; the science of friction, lubrication, and wear. He has formulated and tested all kinds of engine oils, lube oils, metalworking oils, and hydraulic fluids. Currently Paul is principal investigator for energy efficient hydraulic fluids in the NSF funded multi-university Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power. In addition, he is a subject matter expert for the US Marine Corps and chairman of the NFPA Fluids Committee. His research interests include energy efficient oils and biodegradable lubricants.
