Title: Lubricant Additive Interactions with Elastomer Sealing
Presenter: Dr. Michael Glasgow, OEM Technical Service, Afton Chemical
Presenter Bio: Dr. Michael Glasgow received his B.S. degree in Chemistry at Virginia Tech, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Polymer Science at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. He worked for ICI Polyester and DuPont Polyester Films for 3 years, before joining Ethyl Corp (now Afton Chemical) in 1999. Mike has over 14 years experience in automatic transmission fluids formulation, development, testing, and validation for automotive OEMs and Tier 1s. He is an author on 15 journal articles, and holds two patents in the lubrication science field. Mike's area of research at Afton is ATF fluids, and the interaction of ATF fluids with elastomer sealing materials is the topic of his presentation tonight.
Abstract: ATFs are the most complex lubricants in the industry. They require careful formulation balancing to achieve friction control and durability, good wear protection for transmission parts durability, foam and air entrainment control, and fuel economy. In addition to keeping the transmission running at optimum performance, compatibility with elastomeric seals of all types is required in order to a) keep the lubricant in the transmission (leakage), and b) to prevent outside contaminants from getting inside. A review of ATF formulations, elastomer seal swellants used in ATF fluids, the methods of testing ATF fluids with seals, and a discussion of chemistry interactions of ATF composition with elastomeric seal materials will be presented.
