Golf Balls and Bearings: How dimples can dramatically affect the lambda factor
Presenter: Kevin Austin
Abstract:
With the viscosity of the oils being used in transmission and differentials becoming lower, oil film parameter lambda can fall below 0.5 (VG10 oil used). In order to handle such increasingly severe lubrication conditions, NTN has developed Micro HL (high-lubrication) tapered roller bearings.
NTN’s unique micro-pitting surface finish increases bearing life in applications with insufficient lubrication. Based on the theory that oil film formation in bearing contact areas can be improved by changing the character and direction of the components’ surface finishes, the distinguishing micro-pots are able to effectively capture and channel oil to where it’s needed
