Certified Lubrication Specialist (CLS) . . . The Key to Success
Since it began in 1994, the certification program standardizes the body of knowledge which a lubrication specialist must possess, and recognizes those individuals who can demonstrate their expertise in critical areas of lubrication technology.
Both the Individual and Company are Winners
Companies that employ certified specialists gain a competitive advantage. A certified lubrication specialist can provide the best possible technical advice about lubrication problems, either in their own plant or with customers. Individuals holding the CLS designation become more valuable employees and show a commitment to excellence in their profession.
What is a Lubrication Specialist?
- A Lubrication Specialist is an individual who might be designated a "Lubrication Engineer" by his/her employer.
- The job description for a Lubrication Specialist includes but is not limited to the following:
- Evaluates and selects the proper lubricants to use. Recommends changes in lubricants.
- Assists in purchasing lubricants by identifying which companies and products can be used interchangeably in a cost-effective manner.
- Conducts lube surveys; specifies lubricants and procedures to those buying or installing new equipment.
- Trains lubricators and assembles work lists for them to use. Establishes lube frequencies on all equipment. Designs or modifies all types of lubricant dispensing systems.
- Develops and implements Quality Assurance and Used Lubricant analysis programs.
- Oversees oily waste collection, reclamation or disposal. Converts as much usage as is economical to bulk.
- Consolidates lubricant inventories to the fewest possible products.
- Maintains records of lubricants by application throughout the plant.
- Troubleshoots and problem solves supposed lubrication failures to identify root cause. Identifies corrective action to take and follows up.
What is CLS Certification?
- Certification recognizes those individuals who possess current knowledge of lubrication fundamentals and theory.
- Certification is obtained by scoring at least 70% on a three-hour exam with 150 questions chosen at random from a stockpile of questions covering the following subjects:
- Lubrication Fundamentals
- Fluid Conditioning
- Storage, Handling and Application of Lubricants
- Monitoring and Reducing Consumption of Lubricants
- Gears
- Bearings
- Seals
- Fluid Power
- Lubricant Manufacturing
- Pneumatics
- Transportation Lubricants
- Metalworking
- Solvents and Cleaners
- Problem Solving
- Lubricant Analysis
- Lubrication Programs
- A bibliography of references that cover any areas where gaps in knowledge may exist is available from Society Headquarters.
All candidates will be notified regarding their exam results as soon as possible.
The successful candidate will be awarded a certificate for passing the exam.
Why is Certification Important?
- The body of knowledge which the Lubrication Specialist needs to know has never been well defined. STLE's Certification Committee has set reasonable standards that reflect current knowledge used daily by competent people in the lubrication business.
- To make good decisions, a Lubrication Specialist must have some knowledge in areas related to lubrication. Certification provides an incentive to broaden horizons and develop more valuable employees.
- As certification becomes more popular, management will become aware of the need for people with this type of expertise.
- In a competitive job market, the certified specialist may have an edge over the self-proclaimed lubrication expert.
- Certification is already very popular in other technical fields such as fluid power, nondestructive testing, plant engineering and purchasing; so much so that the Council of Engineering Specialty Boards has been created to provide certification standards.
These standards assure that specialty certification will provide uniformity, giving credibility
to individuals working in a given technical field such as lubrication technology.
